2024 Sucked

So, I think I can safely say that this year has probably been one of the most challenging years I’ve ever faced, both from a personal and business perspective, and I realise that the two can be intertwined in a few too many ways.

After three years of running my business as part of a slightly odd network, we finally decided to go completely our way. There are many reasons for this, but I wanted to regain control of what we were doing and who we were doing it for. This wasn’t just a business decision but a deeply personal one. It stemmed from the desire to regain control, to work with people who share our values, and to create something meaningful. That’s why we’ve embraced a simple yet powerful mantra for East & Ascent: work with good people, do good work, and help businesses grow.

This year has taught me so much about trust—the kind you build, the kind you lose, and the kind you need to nurture. It’s taught me about resilience, too. The type of resilience that’s required when you think you’re about to lose a parent, the kind that’s needed when you realise someone isn’t who they say they were and you put all your trust in them, the type of resilience that means you may lose business, but you’ll keep your dignity.

While these lessons have been invaluable, they’ve also been humbling. I owe a lot to the people around me—especially my wife and my closest co-worker (soon-to-be business partner) —who’ve supported me through the hard days when the weight of business seemed to touch every corner of our lives.

But now, it’s time to look forward. Dwelling on what’s gone wrong can only take you so far; the real growth comes in how you respond. 2024 isn’t just another chapter—it was a book that needed re-writing. Rebranding as East & Ascent marks a shift, a renewed focus, and a clear statement of intent. In 2025, we will not just be a branding and marketing agency. We’re going to be a collaborative powerhouse.

I’ve never believed in the “one-stop shop” approach. You risk diluting expertise when you try to do everything under one roof. Instead, I’ve always valued partnerships—working with specialists who bring excellence to the table. That’s the foundation of East & Ascent. We’re doubling down on what we do best—branding and marketing strategy—and building a collective of trusted partners who excel in their domains. Whether localising a brand for Southeast Asia or managing a global campaign, our approach will always be tailored, collaborative, and focused on delivering impact.

Looking ahead, I see endless opportunities for us and the businesses we partner with. As part of the collective we’re forming, we’ll be able to offer something truly unique: a fusion of creativity, cultural nuance, and specialised expertise. Together, we’ll help companies enter new markets and thrive in them. Whether it’s navigating the complexities of APAC, crafting an unforgettable brand story, or fostering meaningful connections through digital platforms, we’ll be there, side by side with our clients.

For anyone considering working with us, know this: at East & Ascent, it’s not just about the work we do—it’s about how we do it. We believe in collaboration, meaningful relationships, and creating solutions that resonate authentically. We’re not here to chase vanity metrics or sell cookie-cutter strategies. We’re here to make a difference—for you, your business, and the communities you serve.

As I close this year’s chapter, I’m filled with optimism and gratitude for the lessons learned, the trust placed in us by our clients, and the opportunities ahead.

Looking Ahead to 2025: Tailored Expertise, United Purpose

It’ll be announced later in the year, as we want to first road-test the service offer with partners we’ve collaborated with effectively and some new partners who wish to join the ride.

Here’s a taste of how we’ll be working with clients in 2025:

Crafting Brands That Resonate and Last

In an era where authenticity is king, building a brand that truly connects with its audience is more critical than ever. We’ll create impactful brands through naming, messaging, and positioning strategies that stand the test of time. Our design and identity services will ensure your brand looks as powerful as it feels, delivering comprehensive systems from logos to web design and marketing collateral.

Engaging Audiences Where They Are

Digital engagement will only grow in importance. Our marketing and PR campaigns will integrate SEO, social media, and an AI-content-driven approach to build engagement and create robust reputations. At the same time, digital solutions and content like websites, apps, and dynamic storytelling through videos and animations will help businesses tell their stories in ways that captivate and convert.

Seamless Market Expansion

With Southeast Asia and the Asia-Pacific region poised for continued growth, we’ll specialise in helping businesses enter and thrive in these emerging markets. From localised branding and cultural adaptation to building outbound sales setups tailored to the region, our market entry consultancy will unlock new opportunities. Alongside this, with a team on the ground in SEA already working globally, we’ll continue to offer outsourced services to global businesses looking to tap into the wealth of expertise in the region doing top-quality work.

Harnessing AI and Big Data for Smarter Decisions

The rise of AI is reshaping industries, and we’ll help businesses ride this wave effectively. We’ll enhance profitability and efficiency by providing scalable, human-centred AI strategies.
